As 2027 general election draws closer, the political fate of Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, the venomous fire – spitting – tongue legislator, now appears to have been sealed, and reached its dead end.
This is due to his constant, uncoordinated and combative outbursts in his unpopular motions he has been presenting to the Senate for debate.
Astute political observers have pointed out that the motions, alongside his utterances have unsettled the UDA leadership, and at times irritated a section of the masses which the party is hoping to consolidate for purposes of national integration and future political alliances.
It has been established that many of the unpopular ideologies the Senator has been propagating don’t have blessings from the inner core of the ruling party but dismissed as mere populistic stunts meant for political attention and self-aggrandisement.
Some of his activities in the Senate have pierced the party harshly like when he introduced a motion to scrap the five-year term limit and prolong it to seven years for the president which painted the party in bad light; then the very latest queer scenario of him is when he was reprimanded by senator Nelson Koech.
This was when he fronted a motion in Senate on presidential retirement benefits with intention of suspending retirement allowances and emoluments and other packages to former president Uhuru Kenyatta, a motion that was scuttled by his own party because the matter was entrenched in the constitution.
Due to his unpopular stunts and unsteady, childish moves, and word that he has been harassing top parastatal bosses using the name of State House to coerce and intimidate, the vocal Senator has been blocked from the House on the Hill, and even dropped as committee chairman in the Senate for Constitutional Affairs.
Contrary to speculations that the Senator was communicating the opinion of the party establishment, he has engaged in constant attacks on people closer to the president, among them powerful CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Stephen Sang and Senator Jackson Mandago. It is instructive to note that despite him engaging in incessant warfare with the named persons, Murkomen was promoted by the president to interior ministry, and Governor Sang was handed party certificate to secure easy victory for second term.
A section of residents say he has completely failed to nail Governor Sang on allegations of mismanagement, pointing out that on the many occasions he has presented them before Senate, the Governor appears with well documented evidence making him (Senator) appear as a malicious propagandist who doesn’t do proper ground work before opening his mouth to spit out venom that can burn the nation.
The most recent of him was when he marshalled fellow Senators for an impromptu visit of the county to assess the status of health in the county.
The visiting Senators were embraced by development in the county and gave the Governor a clean bill of health, and even celebrated milestones in the county by imbibing milk processed in the county at governor’s parlour while the county Senator who had accompanied them, fled to unknown destination as he disappeared in the thin air.
Back to 2027 elections, a specific arrangement has been mooted out to cut to size the combative Senator. He is accused of engaging in unnecessary fights with fellow leaders, and appears sympathetic to former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by both houses.
It is claimed that during the impeachment process of Gachagua, he voted for his removal but soon afterwards, apologised to him claiming that it was the position of the party as he was coerced into making the decision and not out of his free will.
The ruling party and those who have the ear of the president have expressed their desire to replace him with former Emgwen MP, Alexander Kosgey.
It is whispered that Murkomen is fronting for Kosgey to tame the Senator on grounds that he is being used to make Ruto unpopular. That State House has fallen out with the Senator is no secret
Kosgey recently got a boost of a lifetime after hundreds of elders from ten clans of Nandi converged at his ancestral home in Kipkoror, crowned him in a traditional leadership attire and handed him instruments of power combined with ritualistic incarnations.
For the Nandi governor race to succeed Sang is on with many eyeing UDA ticket.
Former Governor Cleophas Lagat who lost to Sang has not given up. Nandi woman representative Cynthia Muge cannot be ruled out as things stand now. Tinderet MP Julius Melly entrance is also complicating matters as he is a darling of many. Dr Zaccius Rop is in the race just like Engineer Anderson Serem and Antipas Tirop.
